A centipede enclosure needs to be genuinely escape-proof before anything else, because centipedes are the best escape artists in the invertebrate hobby. The essentials are a locking or weighted lid, ventilation holes smaller than the animal’s head, at least 4 to 6 inches of packed burrowing substrate, and a hide it can wedge itself under.

Everything else about the setup is straightforward. The difficulty with centipedes is not husbandry, it is containment and handling, and a build that takes both seriously turns a nerve-racking animal into a manageable one. Before You Build: What You Are Housing

The practical differences that drive enclosure design:

They are fast. Considerably faster than any tarantula, and they change direction instantly.

They can flatten. A centipede compresses its body to get through a gap far narrower than it looks capable of. A gap you would dismiss is an exit.

They climb well, including silicone seams, mesh, and sometimes glass.

They have a venomous bite delivered by modified front legs called forcipules. For the large tropical Scolopendra species commonly kept, the bite is not life threatening to a healthy adult, but it is severely painful and swelling can last days. This is a look-only animal.

That last point sets the tone for the entire build: design so that you never have to reach in near the animal.

Enclosure Size

Centipedes do not need large enclosures, and a smaller one is easier to secure.

Floor space over height, since most kept species are terrestrial burrowers. Some Scolopendra climb readily, so height still needs securing rather than ignoring.

Do not oversize. A large enclosure makes an animal that is already hard to locate effectively invisible, and you need to know where it is before you open anything.

Escape-Proofing

This is the section that matters. Assume the animal is actively looking for a way out, because it is.

The lid. A latching lid, a locking clip lid, or a sliding glass top with a lock. If your lid rests on top by weight alone, add clips or a weight. A screen lid held by friction is not adequate.

Ventilation holes. Every hole must be smaller than the animal’s head capsule. If the head fits, the whole animal fits, because the body flattens to follow. Drill or melt small holes and check them against your animal, not against a general guideline.

Seams and corners. Inspect silicone seams in glass tanks for lifted edges, and check plastic bins for warping at the rim, which is the most common failure point in a used container.

The gap at the lid rim. In many plastic bins there is a small channel where the lid meets the rim. Run a finger around it and check that it closes completely.

Cable and cord entries. If a probe or heater cable enters the enclosure, seal the entry with aquarium-safe silicone once cured, or route it so no gap exists.

Do not overfill the substrate. Substrate piled close to the lid gives the animal a launch point at the seam. Leave clear space between the substrate surface and the lid.

Keep the enclosure in a room you can close. This is not paranoia. An escaped centipede in a house with a closed door is recoverable, and one in an open-plan home usually is not.

Substrate

Depth: 4 to 6 inches for a medium species, more for a large one. Most kept centipedes burrow, and a shallow setup produces a stressed animal that spends its time patrolling the walls looking for an exit.

Mix:

  • 3 parts coconut fibre
  • 2 parts organic topsoil, no fertiliser or perlite
  • 1 part play sand

Pack it firmly. Add it slightly damp and press it down in layers. Loose substrate collapses under a burrowing centipede and gives no tunnel structure. It should hold a thumbprint. This is the same packing test used for fossorial tarantula setups, where a collapsing burrow causes the same problem.

Cover: a piece of cork bark laid flat, a half log, or a curved piece of bark half buried at one end. Bed one edge in so it cannot shift.

Leaf litter on the surface gives cover and helps hold moisture.

Skip gravel, cedar or pine shavings, calcium sand, and anything scented.

Humidity and Temperature

Most commonly kept tropical species want 70 to 80% humidity and 72 to 82F. Desert species want considerably drier conditions, so check what you have rather than assuming.

Moisture goes into the substrate, not the air. Pour water down one corner until that section is damp throughout, and let the rest stay moderately moist. The animal will position itself where it suits.

Do not mist a centipede. Beyond being ineffective, it means opening the enclosure and putting your hand over an animal that reacts fast.

Ventilation matters as much as moisture. A closed damp enclosure produces mold and mites. Small holes on two opposing walls give cross flow while staying secure.

Heating, if needed, is a low wattage mat on a side wall with a thermostat, never underneath. Most homes need none.

A water dish, shallow and always filled, is worth including even in species that get most of their moisture from prey.

Feeding and Maintenance Without Opening the Lid

The safest routine is one that minimises how often the enclosure is open and how far your hands go in.

Feeding: appropriately sized crickets, roaches, or the occasional pre-killed pinky for very large specimens. Prey should be no longer than half the centipede’s body. Adults eat once every 7 to 10 days, juveniles more often. Drop prey in through a partly opened lid using long tongs and close it immediately.

Remove uneaten prey within 24 hours with long tongs. A cricket left in with a molting centipede will gnaw at it.

Water dish refills: use a long-spouted bottle through a partly opened lid rather than lifting the dish out.

Spot cleaning: long tongs, and only when you can see where the animal is. If you cannot locate it, do not open the enclosure. Because that limits how often you can clean, a cleanup crew earns its place here more than in most setups. A population of dwarf whites in the substrate processes waste and leftover prey between the openings you actually make.

Full substrate changes: rare, and best handled by transferring the animal to a secure temporary container first using a catch cup and a card, over a large empty bin, with the room door closed.

Molting and Behaviour

Centipedes molt underground and stay buried for one to several weeks, emerging pale and soft. Do not dig, do not feed, and do not disturb the enclosure while it is down. A molting centipede is defenceless and easily killed by a loose cricket.

Normal behaviour is nocturnal, mostly hidden, with sudden fast movement when disturbed. Expect an animal you see occasionally rather than one on display.

Signs worth noticing:

  • Constant wall patrolling. Usually substrate too shallow, too dry, or too wet.
  • Refusing food for weeks. Normally a molt approaching.
  • Sitting exposed in daylight repeatedly. Something in the enclosure is wrong, most often moisture.

Never handle a centipede. There is no version of handling that is worth the bite, and even experienced keepers move them with a catch cup rather than by hand.

Common Setup Mistakes

  • A lid that is not secured. The most consequential error by a wide margin.
  • Ventilation holes too large. If the head fits, the animal fits.
  • Shallow substrate. Produces a stressed animal that spends its time seeking an exit.
  • Loose, unpacked substrate. Burrows collapse.
  • Substrate piled near the lid. Gives a launch point at the seam.
  • Misting instead of wetting substrate. Ineffective, and it means opening the lid unnecessarily.
  • Opening the enclosure without locating the animal. How most escapes actually happen.
  • Handling. Not worth it, ever.
