Almost every starter kit sold with hermit crabs includes a single small dish, or worse, a sponge. That setup is one of the main reasons pet shop crabs die within months. Why Hermit Crabs Need Salt Water
Land hermit crabs are marine animals that moved ashore relatively recently in evolutionary terms. They breathe through modified gills that must stay moist, and they carry water inside their shell to keep those gills wet between visits to a pool.
That reservoir is not just fresh water. Crabs regulate the salinity of the water they hold, drawing from both pools to reach a balance that suits them. Deny them one source and they cannot make that adjustment.
Salt water specifically supports:
- Osmoregulation. Crabs manage internal salt balance by choosing between pools. Only fresh water available means chronic stress on that system.

- Gill function. Moisture inside the shell keeps gills working, and the crab decides its composition.
Crabs are also observed choosing differently at different times, spending long periods in salt water and then switching to fresh. That behaviour only makes sense if both are available.
Which Salt to Use
This is where most mistakes happen, and the wrong salt is worse than no salt at all.
Use marine aquarium salt. The kind sold for saltwater fish tanks, mixed to the instructions on the packet. Instant Ocean is the brand most keepers use, and any equivalent marine salt mix works. It contains the full range of trace minerals crabs would encounter in seawater.
Do not use table salt. It is sodium chloride with anti-caking agents and often iodine, lacking everything else seawater contains. It is actively harmful.
Do not use aquarium salt sold for freshwater fish. This is a different product entirely, despite the similar name and shelf position. It is essentially sodium chloride and is not a marine salt mix.
Do not use sea salt from the kitchen, rock salt, or Himalayan salt. None of them replicate a marine mix.
Mixing: follow the packet, which usually gives a ratio per gallon. Mix a batch in a jug, let it dissolve fully, and store the remainder in a sealed container for top ups. There is no need to measure salinity with a refractometer for a hermit crab tank, though keepers who have one tend to aim for the range recommended for a marine aquarium.
The Fresh Water Pool
Equally required, and equally easy to get wrong.
Dechlorinate it. Tap water contains chlorine and often chloramine, both harmful to invertebrates. Use a dechlorinator that removes chlorine, chloramine, and heavy metals. The dose is small and a bottle lasts a long time.
Bottled spring water works without treatment.
Distilled water does not. It has been stripped of the trace minerals crabs use, and it is not a substitute for treated tap water.
Do not use filtered water and assume it is dechlorinated. Most domestic filters do not remove chloramine.
Note that the salt water pool also needs dechlorinating, since marine salt mixed into untreated tap water still contains chlorine.
Pool Setup and the Drowning Problem

Both pools need to be deep enough for your largest crab to submerge completely. A crab that cannot get its whole body in cannot fill its shell properly or bathe.
That depth creates the one real hazard in the setup. Hermit crabs drown in steep-sided dishes, particularly smaller crabs and crabs weakened before a molt. Every pool needs an exit route.
Workable approaches:
- A dish with a natural slope, sold as a reptile water dish or a hermit crab pool
- Flat stones or slate stacked as steps inside a straight-sided dish
- A piece of plastic mesh wedged against one wall as a ramp
- Aquarium-safe silicone holding a few pebbles to one side as a grip surface
Sink the dishes level with the substrate so crabs walk in rather than climb. This also keeps sand out of the water, since a raised dish gets sand kicked into it constantly.
Change the water every two to three days, and sooner if food debris or waste ends up in it. Both pools foul faster than people expect in a warm humid tank.
Skip the sponge entirely. Sponges were standard advice for years and are now widely regarded as a mistake. They harbour bacteria, they provide none of the submersion crabs need, and they became popular mainly because they let sellers ship crabs with a tiny dish.

What Happens Without Salt Water
The decline is gradual, which is why it is so often missed and blamed on something else.
Typical progression: a crab kept without salt water may seem fine for weeks or months. Then it becomes lethargic, eats less, and stops climbing. Molting problems appear, either a molt that stalls or one the crab does not survive. Death is usually attributed to a mystery illness or bad luck.
What makes it hard to spot is the timescale. A crab bought in spring that dies in autumn does not obviously connect to a water dish, and pet shop staff frequently tell buyers a single dish is enough.
If you have been keeping crabs on fresh water only, add a salt pool now. Crabs will use it immediately and the situation is recoverable in animals that have not already reached the point of visible decline.

Salt Water in the Substrate
A second use for your marine salt mix, and one that catches keepers out.
The substrate in a hermit crab tank should be moistened with salt water rather than fresh, mixed to roughly half the strength of the drinking pool. There are two reasons. Salt water resists souring, so a deep sand and coconut fibre mix stays usable far longer before it goes anaerobic and starts to smell. And it matches what crabs encounter when they dig on a beach, which is damp saline sand rather than freshwater mud.
Practical method: mix a batch at half the packet strength, add it gradually while turning the substrate over, and stop when the mix holds its shape in your fist without water beading out. That squeeze test is the same one used across moisture-gradient invertebrate enclosures, including isopod bins.
Dechlorinated fresh water is an acceptable substitute if that is what you have available. It is not a problem, it just means the substrate needs replacing a little sooner.
Do not oversaturate. Wet substrate is worse than slightly dry substrate, since a waterlogged mix collapses molting tunnels and goes anaerobic quickly.
How Much Salt Water Do You Actually Mix
A common practical question, since marine salt is sold in quantities aimed at fish tanks.
For drinking pools, a gallon of mixed salt water lasts a small tank several weeks, given that pool changes use well under a cup each time. Mix a jug, keep it sealed, and shake before use.
For substrate, a fresh setup with six inches of sand in a 20 gallon tank takes considerably more, potentially a few gallons across the whole mix. Budget for that when you buy salt, because running out halfway through a substrate change is a nuisance.
Storage: mixed salt water keeps indefinitely in a sealed container at room temperature. A large jug or a clean bucket with a lid works. Label it, since it is indistinguishable from fresh water by eye.
Shelf life of the dry mix is effectively unlimited if kept dry and sealed. A single box lasts most crab keepers a very long time.
Salt Water for Other Invertebrates
Worth clearing up, since keepers often run more than one enclosure.
Land hermit crabs are unusual in this requirement. Isopods do not need salt water, and adding it to an isopod bin is harmful. They need a moisture gradient and a calcium source, which is a different arrangement entirely, covered in our guide to isopod species and their needs.
The reason is origin. Land hermit crabs are recently marine and live on tropical coastlines, while terrestrial isopods have been fully land-adapted for far longer. Same broad group, different requirements.
