
The only reliable hermit crab tank mates are other hermit crabs and a cleanup crew of springtails and isopods. Fish, reptiles, amphibians, snails, and most other invertebrates either need incompatible conditions, get eaten, or eat the crabs. Land hermit crabs are opportunistic scavengers and will take almost anything they can catch.
That answer disappoints people, and the disappointment is usually based on a misunderstanding of what a crabitat is. A tank held at 80% humidity with six inches of sand and two salt pools is a very specific environment, and almost nothing else wants to live in it. Other Hermit Crabs: The Right Answer
Hermit crabs are social and do noticeably better in groups. A single crab is a lonelier and less healthy animal than one kept with three or four others.
Group size: three minimum, five or more is better where tank space allows. They pile together to sleep, follow each other around, and a group produces far more visible activity than a solitary crab.
Mixing species is generally fine. Purple pinchers (Coenobita clypeatus) and Ecuadorians (C. compressus) are commonly kept together without trouble, provided you offer shell shapes suiting both. Ecuadorians are faster and slightly more assertive, and they prefer oval openings while purple pinchers want round ones. Getting that wrong causes most of the friction people blame on species mixing.
Mixing sizes works, with one caveat: a very large crab and a very small one in a cramped tank creates unnecessary pressure. Space and shell availability solve it.
What causes conflict is almost always resource scarcity rather than temperament. Too few shells, too little space, or too little food produces shell fights and harassment. The fix is more of all three, and shell selection specifically is covered in our guide to choosing and sizing shells.
Cleanup Crew: Springtails and Isopods
The one addition that genuinely improves a crabitat rather than complicating it.

A hermit crab tank is warm, humid, and full of uneaten food, which is close to ideal conditions for mold and grain mites. A detritivore population handles most of it.
Springtails are the standard first addition. They are tiny, reproduce quickly in moist substrate, eat mold, and are completely ignored by crabs. Add a starter culture at setup and they establish on their own.
Isopods work alongside them, processing leftover protein, shed exoskeletons, and food debris. Species choice matters, since a crabitat is permanently humid and warm:
- Dwarf whites are the usual recommendation. Small, tolerant of constant moisture, and they stay out of the way in the substrate.
- Powder oranges also tolerate the humidity well and breed fast enough to keep pace.
- Larger display species are a waste, since they will mostly be eaten or stay buried where you cannot see them.

Two caveats. Crabs will eat isopods opportunistically, so the population needs to establish before it can sustain that, ideally seeded a few weeks ahead. And a cleanup crew reduces maintenance without replacing it: uneaten fresh food still comes out daily.
Hermit Crab Tank Mates That Do Not Work
The suggestions below come up constantly in forums and pet shops. Each one fails for a specific reason worth understanding rather than just avoiding.
Fish. Land hermit crabs live on land. There is no shared setup, and the pools in a crabitat are far too small and change too often.
Reptiles and amphibians. Frequently suggested, consistently a bad idea. A crabitat runs at 75 to 85F and 75 to 85% humidity with six inches of sand, which suits almost no reptile. Beyond that, a hermit crab will scavenge a sleeping or shedding animal, and many reptiles will eat a crab. Both directions end badly.
Land snails. Superficially plausible, since the humidity is roughly right. In practice hermit crabs attack snails for their shells, which is exactly what you would expect from an animal whose entire lifestyle is built around acquiring shells.
Millipedes. Conditions overlap reasonably, but crabs will eat them, and the substrate a crab needs is sand-heavy rather than the rotting hardwood a millipede eats. Neither animal gets what it needs. Millipedes want their own dedicated setup.
Tarantulas, scorpions, centipedes. Predators. This should not need saying, and yet the question comes up.
Crabs of other types. Marine hermit crabs, fiddler crabs, and vampire crabs all need aquatic or brackish setups incompatible with a land crabitat.
Feeder insects left in the tank. Crickets left loose will chew on a molting crab. Offer food and remove leftovers.
Why Almost Nothing Fits
Understanding the reason saves working through the list species by species.
Humidity. A crabitat holds 75 to 85% relative humidity permanently. That is high enough to cause respiratory and skin problems in most reptiles and to promote fungal issues in animals not adapted to it.
Substrate. Six inches of sand and coconut fibre moistened with salt water is the requirement for molting, and almost no other animal wants that. A millipede wants rotting wood, a tarantula wants a drier packed mix.
Salt water. A permanent marine salt pool is unusual and unsuitable for most invertebrates. Isopods in particular do not want salt water, which is one reason they stay in the substrate rather than at the pools.
The crabs themselves. Land hermit crabs are opportunistic omnivores that will investigate and consume almost anything smaller or slower than they are, particularly at night.

Setting Up the Cleanup Crew
Since this is the only hermit crab tank mates arrangement worth making, it is worth doing properly.
Seed before the crabs, or as early as possible. A springtail culture and a starter portion of isopods need a few weeks to establish before they can withstand being foraged. Adding them to a tank that already holds five crabs usually means they disappear within days.
Give them somewhere the crabs are not. A patch of leaf litter and a piece of bark in a corner, or a shallow area of substrate with extra moisture, gives the population a refuge. Crabs will dig, but a colony with cover persists far better than one on open sand.
Keep the substrate moisture right for both. The 75 to 85% humidity a crabitat needs suits springtails and moisture-tolerant isopods well. The salt water used to moisten crabitat substrate is at roughly half drinking strength, which isopods tolerate in practice, though a slightly less saline corner helps them establish.
Add leaf litter. It is food and cover for the cleanup crew at once, costs nothing, and crabs graze on it too.
Expect to top up occasionally. Even an established population takes losses in a tank with active foragers, and adding a fresh portion once or twice a year keeps it going.
Do not add a cleanup crew and stop cleaning. They handle mold, food debris, and shed exoskeletons, not fresh fruit going off overnight.
Managing a Crab Group
Given that other crabs are the answer, the practical question is how to keep a group running smoothly.
Space: 10 gallons for two or three small crabs, 20 gallons for five, more for larger animals. Floor space matters more than height.
Shells: three to five spares per crab minimum, spread around the tank rather than piled together. Shell scarcity is the leading cause of conflict.
Multiple food and water stations in a larger tank, so a subordinate crab is not competing for access.
Several hides, so a nervous crab always has somewhere to be.
Watch for persistent harassment. Crabs investigating each other’s shells is normal. One crab repeatedly pursuing another and attempting eviction is a signal that shell options are inadequate.
Never separate a molting crab. A crab that has buried is molting and must be left where it is. Isolating it into a separate container is the old advice and it is now regarded as harmful, as covered in our guide to what happens when a crab buries.
Tracking which crabs are up, which are buried, and when each went down is genuinely difficult in a tank of five similar animals. Introducing New Crabs
Quarantine first, ideally for a few weeks in a simple setup with correct conditions. New arrivals frequently molt shortly after purchase, having been due one already, and shipping stress compounds it.
Add crabs together where possible rather than one at a time into an established group, which reduces the sense of an intruder.
Add extra shells before the new crab, not after. The existing crabs will have claimed the good ones.
Expect a settling period. New crabs often bury for days or weeks. That is normal and usually a molt.

What can live with hermit crabs?
Other hermit crabs, plus springtails and small isopods as a cleanup crew. Nothing else reliably works. The combination of 80% humidity, deep sand, salt water, and an opportunistic scavenger rules out virtually every commonly suggested tank mate.
Can hermit crabs live with fish?
No. Land hermit crabs live on land and cannot be housed in an aquatic setup. The water pools in a crabitat are shallow, small, and changed every two to three days, which suits no fish.
Can hermit crabs live alone?

Do hermit crabs eat isopods?
Opportunistically, yes. A cleanup crew still works because isopods breed in the substrate faster than crabs can find them, provided the population is established first. Seed the tank a few weeks before adding crabs.
Can hermit crabs live with snails?
No. Hermit crabs attack land snails for their shells, which is unsurprising given that acquiring shells is central to how they live. Offering plenty of spare shells does not reliably prevent it.
Do hermit crabs fight each other?
